"WHEN SHE RISES UNITES WOMXN ARTISTS FROM LOS ANGELES AND AROUND THE WORLD FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE, COMMUNITY BUILDING AND EQUITY IN THE ARTS." Curated by Erin Yoshi (Press release written by Janna Zinzi, with contact information listed below) July 1, 2018 (Venice, CA) -- When She Rises , a 10-week women-driven arts exhibit highlighting social issues such as ecology justice, immigrant rights and women’s equality, will be on view at SPARC in Venice, CA from July 7 until September 15, 2018. Programming includes public art workshops, discussions and screenings to inspire knowledge sharing and community building between generations, social movements and artist disciplines. The kick-off event on Saturday, July 7th, is from 3-8pm. Shawni Groves: I am a Los Angeles based freelance creative entrepreneur, working primarily in the arts, as a liaison to non-profit organizations, or on behalf of others. My interest and ability to plan and design functions began at a very young age as both of my parents and my maternal grandparents were active socially and on occasion held parties, progressive dinners or other functions at home. My grandparents were also very involved socially in LA civic circles and my grandfather belonged to numerous organizations and served on many different Boards. While living in Los Angeles as a young girl fresh from Hawaii, I fell in love with the murals and mosaics that graced the city during that time – especially in downtown and around along the Miracle Mile on Wilshire Blvd., and the S&L's in Hollywood. My love for public art has only deepened since then. I work with some incredible people who reside in the City of Angels and beyond. I also love exploring places and experiences and spontaneously photographing moments that capture my heart or imagination, or deep sense of awe mother nature provides at every moment.
