July 3, 2018 - Artist and DAV, Christine McBride, was born and raised in Southern California. She holds a bachelor’s in fine art and an RYT-200 in yoga and has overcome many different challenges in life. As a result of jet fuel exposure during active duty in the US Navy, she developed different autoimmune diseases, a variety of cancers, and suffered from acute depression and anxiety. These challenges left her reeling and in need of serious self-care, and as of today considers herself a survivor. After western medicine could do no more, she turned to holistic healing and Yoga, a raw vegan diet, healing herbs and meditation - all of which continue to help heal her.
The combination has literally brought her back to life. Today she's thriving and teaching others to do the same through Yoga and alternative and organic lifestyle choices. “Life as an artist is like living simultaneously on infinite levels of self-discovery. The journey begins and ends within, always within. Yoga helps align my mind and body, so I may tap into my higher creative self. The result is what overflows, spilling out of me onto the canvas.” 



Peace of My Heart’- 4'x4' acrylic on canvas is a chaotic representation of an iconic image. Energetically, the peace sign reflects both the current happenings in the U.S. (the symbol spinning out threatening to break apart), and a sincere desire for peace. Her use of secondary colors depicts our melting pot culture. Photos don't do justice to this meditative piece of art, and it must be seen in person.

She states, “We are all interconnected, like the colors in ‘Peace of My Heart’, the paints begin as solid colors. As I throw them onto the canvas, they meet, mingle and fuse into delicious patterns and vivid new tertiary colors. Often, what we end up with is more beautiful than anything we could have ever imagined. I believe this is very much like the human spirit.” Christine lives and works from her home in Bakersfield, CA. This painting is for sale and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to a DAV organization.

 Part of Renee Howard's "HEAVY METAL WALL" Located in North Hollywood, CA (All photos by Shawni Groves) In early August, I happened upon this mind-blowing wall of found objects and recycled materials that had been whimsically transformed into a 45' mosaic art piece. I did not know anything about the artist, there were no visible identifiers I could see, so I took several photos and made a point to return.  Renee Howard and installation assistants on Saturday, August 18, 2018 I did just that on Saturday, August 18 and was thrilled to see and meet  mosaic artist and creator, Renee Howard and her team of volunteer installers. They were set-up on the sidewalk continuing to carefully secure each nut, penny and bolt, alongside colorful pieces of cut aluminum, mirrors, bottle glass, and odds and ends into a continuous swirling pattern.    Many of the circular works remind me of chakra's as the flow of energy they create is very much alive
